Is a harness better than a collar for walking?

For walking, usually yes. A collar concentrates all force on the neck and trachea, and repeated pulling against one can cause real damage over time. Keep the collar for ID tags and use a harness for the lead, particularly with puppies, pullers and flat-faced breeds.

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Measure the chest girth at the widest point, just behind the front legs, and the neck where the harness will sit. Use the girth measurement against the size chart rather than your dog weight. If your dog is between sizes, size up and tighten the straps.

How tight should a dog harness be?

You should be able to slide two flat fingers under any strap. Tighter than that restricts the shoulder, looser than that lets a dog reverse out of it. Recheck the fit every few weeks on a growing puppy.

Should the lead clip at the front or the back?

Back clip for a dog that already walks nicely, and for running or hiking. Front clip for a dog that pulls, because it turns them towards you instead of letting them drive forward. Many of our harnesses have both.
