How deep should clumping litter be in the tray?

Around 7 to 10 centimetres. Too shallow and urine reaches the tray floor and sticks, which makes scooping messy and lets odour build. Too deep and most cats will not dig properly.

How often should I scoop and change it?

Scoop at least once a day, twice in a multi-cat home. With daily scooping and topping up, a full change every two to four weeks is usually enough. If you can smell the tray after scooping, it needs changing.

Can I flush clumping litter?

No. Sodium bentonite expands in water and will block a drain, and this is a common cause of plumbing calls. Bag it and put it in general waste. Only litters specifically labelled flushable can go down a toilet.

How do I switch my cat to a new litter?

Mix the new litter in gradually over a week or two, starting at about a quarter. Cats are strongly attached to substrate texture and a sudden change is a common cause of toileting outside the tray. If your cat resists, slow down rather than pushing through.
