Do water fountains really make cats drink more?

For most cats, yes. Cats evolved to get moisture from prey and have a weak thirst drive, and many prefer moving water because in nature still water is more likely to be stagnant. More intake means more dilute urine, which lowers the risk of crystals and blockages.

How often do I need to clean a fountain?

Rinse and refill every two or three days and strip the whole unit down weekly, including the pump. Slime builds inside a pump faster in warm conditions, and an unclean fountain is worse than a clean bowl. Change filters on the schedule on the pack.

My cat is scared of the fountain. What should I do?

Run it alongside the existing water bowl for a week or two rather than replacing it, and start it on the quietest setting. Never remove the old bowl until the cat is drinking from the fountain reliably.

How much water should a cat drink each day?
